What is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)?

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of making your brand visible — and recommended — inside AI-generated answers. Where SEO optimizes for ranked links a person clicks, GEO optimizes for what the model says when there is no list to scroll.

From links to answers

Your customers increasingly ask ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity before they ever reach a search box. These assistants don't return ten blue links; they return one answer that names a handful of brands and moves on. If you're not in that answer, you're invisible — and there is no page two.

GEO is not SEO (but they're cousins)

  • SEO rewards backlinks, keywords and crawlable pages.
  • GEO rewards being a trusted, frequently-seen source that models can confidently cite in the right context.

The overlap is real — good content still helps — but the target moved. You're now optimizing for a model's judgement, not a ranking algorithm.

What models actually reward

  1. Trusted sources that already carry authority.
  2. Repetition in context — the same facts, seen across many places.
  3. Structured, citable claims that are easy to quote.
  4. Freshness — recent, maintained information.

Where to start

Begin by measuring what AI already says about you, then close the gaps deliberately. That's exactly the loop Citalify runs — Discover, Create, Seed, Measure — on autopilot.
